Most of the repairing work of furnace is highly simple and does not consume much of the time. So before calling a contractor or a professional to look after the problem you can inspect the furnace by yourself.
Few simple steps to repair your furnace are
Disconnect the system
Before moving on to any repair work make sure that power of your system is disconnected. Turn of the power of your thermostat and remove the plug.
Changing air filters
Dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons for the problem in your furnace. Dirty air filters block the air flow inside your system as a result your air conditioner will not be able to cool or heat the room properly. Cleaning and changing the air filters can help you to avoid or solve the problems.
Checking the circuit
Check the fuses that supply power to the circuit are not tripped. Make that your plug is properly connected to the circuit.
Thermostat
The problem in the furnace may be arising because the thermostat may not be working properly. Your thermostat might be down on batteries try changing the batteries of your thermostat.
If your room is not heating properly check that your thermostat is set to heat mode. Then make sure that your thermostat is properly programmed.
Press reset button
Press the reset button and wait for 30 minutes. Resetting the unit may help you to solve the problem if the unit is still not operating properly try some other techniques.
Do not close many registers
If you close more than 25% of the air registers it will get difficult for the furnace to remove the heat outside the unit. And results in the heat build up inside the furnace and giving rise to many problems.
Checking Pilot light
Make sure that gas supply of your furnace is on and pilot light is lit and having blue flames if not orifice might be clogged. Clean the orifice. Just poke the thin wire into the tiny orifice where the pilot flame normally burns to knock out any debris.
Reduce drafts:
If a draft causes problems with the pilot light, you may need to close the windows or doors in the room.
Check the gas valves
Check the furnace’s gas valve to make sure that it hasn’t somehow been turned to the “Off” position.
Gas leak
If you find any odour of gas turn off the furnace does not turn on any heating devices open all the doors and windows and call a professional
